Devils Backbone

The Devils Backbone was a treacherous mining trail to the Dunstan Goldfields that was widely used in the late 1800s. Many pioneers seeking their fortune in the goldfields of Central Otago saw this trail as a pathway to their riches...but a few travelled it as a pathway to their demise.

We offer two wines in our Devils Backbone brand. Both wines give you exceptional drinking at a modest pricepoint, providing very high value. With an accent on spicy notes, there's a pleasurable decadence in each wine that brings you back for more and more.

Our impactful branding offers "glow-in-the-dark" label features, making the wine stand out in restaurants and is a real talking point at dinner parties. QR Code technology is a feature of our Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris labels, offering consumers the chance to directly interact with our website from their smartphones. We regularly run promotions from a page on the website that can only be accessed from the QR Code.

The Shaky Bridge Brand Family

Shaky Bridge Wines has a dynamic, diversified portfolio of high quality wines at different price points. We deliver exceptional value for money in all of our wines. While this sounds like a simple philosophy, we go to great lengths to ensure every bottle of wine we produce will meet your expectations of quality for the price you have paid.

Situated in the southern most wine growing region in the world, the Alexandra Basin of Central Otago, every Shaky Bridge vintage is greatly influenced by the growing conditions during the year. As much as we try to get the very best out of every vineyard block we manage, mother nature can work against us from time to time. Due to the natural impact of weather on our vines and the grapes harvested, our portfolio of wines allows us to ensure the highest quality in each brand tier.

Only our very best fruit is used in our Artisan Series wines, while any grapes not reserved for the Artisan Series are used in our Devils Backbone or Pioneer Series wines. Our new 'BBQ Wine Co.' label is reserved for wines we want you to have a bit of fun with! Our BBQ White 2010 blend of Gewurztraminer, Riesling and Chardonnay is a delicious example of what we mean! Sometimes you just want a tasty glass of wine that doesn't cost too much; that's when you reach for wine from the BBQ Wine Co.

Notes From The Winemaker

I look to express the spicy elements of our fruit in our Devils Backbone wines, yet make them broadly appealing to any wine drinker in any environment.

The 2007 Devils Backbone Pinot Noir is a seductive Pinot Noir that will captivate you on the first sip. Rich, smooth and full of temptation, I used a large portion of fruit from our Shaky Bridge vineyard in the wine. Deep ruby in color with spicy aromas of black cherry, blackcurrant and vanilla from toasted oak, this wine has intense layers of flavor supporting the rich, ripe tannins and scorched earth notes. The finish is decadent and complete.

2010 is the first vintage of our Devils Backbone Pinot Gris. Offering spicy notes amid the orchard fruit flavors and citrus notes, this wine is made 100% in stainless steel to keep the fresh, clean, natural attributes of our high quality fruit. Perfect to sip and delicious with a variety of foods.
